Rufus, it is 2020. There are a lot of women out there who honestly do not want to be called "Ladies." It''s sexist. Other than that, this is the Rufus album you''ve been waiting a LONG time for!

This album has no business being as good as it is.

I first discovered Rufus in his Poses/Want One days, and finally caught him on tour several times during the Release the Stars tour. Those albums were (and remain) incredibly beautiful and powerful and meaningful for me. Dinner At Eight will still reduce me to tears every time.

I continued to follow Rufus through his musical journey over the years, but nothing struck me like those early albums did.

Until this one.

It took a few listens, but songs like Romantical Man and Unfollow the Rules are unmistakable compositions of genius. The album taken as a whole tells a story from a wisened, sometimes world-weary, but open-hearted matured man and his take on the current world and his place in it. The poetry of lyrics like "Can''t be pedantic, if you''ve got to look it up, the definition" and "Just like Hercules in Thebes was just by just being a man" leave me awestruck.

If you can catch his live performance of the album tracks from his quarantined recording at the Paramor I highly recommend it, for a stripped down interpretation of all these tracks.

Overall, I am happy to be growing older with Rufus'' music as my soundtrack.

While Rufus’s music continues to soar, breaking rules of pop, this album (on first listen) is his least impressive yet. Where as his self indulgent absurdities were once charming they are now tedious, frequently verging on ridiculous. While some of the lyrics work, most don’t - and are often jarring. The wonderful world of Rufus feels smaller, almost claustrophobic. Either Rufus is being brave, mixing amateurish synth sounds with strumming guitars, or he really is out of the game. My favourite of his recent songs, Sword of Damocles, is not included. The single from the album, Damsel in Distress, is awful, a pastiche of how he hears Joni Mitchell. It reduces her genius to a self indulgent neurosis, as if Rufus knows better (which he clearly doesn’t). The album’s greatest weakness is its tiredness, as if it has no reason to be. Up until this release, Rufus always had something to sing about and boundaries to break. Now he feels like a caricature, like Liberace on acid. His emotions no longer connect, his songs no longer vital, just window dressing. I hope I am wrong. Maybe lockdown has made me mean, and when I get to know it I will delete this review and say something kinder.

I was a big fan of the Want albums and Release The Stars and saw him live a few times then. After that I rather drifted away. I didn''t like the album he wrote after his mum died and thought his classical ventures a bit pretentious. This feels like the logical follow up to Release The Stars, a similar feel, at once a grand sweep and yet intimate and moving.

A return to form after that Shakespeare album. This is pure Rufus. Florid, abundant and totally over the top. It''s glorious! As with all of Rufus'' albums it take a few listens for the tunes to really stick. There''s a bit of all his styles here. A touch of solo piano that sometimes fill out to full band, countrified pop on ''You Ain''t Big'', 70s folkiness with hand claps and strumming acoustic guitar ''Damsel in Distress'', and most of all big abundant vocals atop pumping drums, swooning strings, swooshing keyboards, operatic backing singers. It really picks up from the style of the Want albums and the big melodrama of Release the Stars. As per usual the songs are all about you know who. There''s some very unusual vocal phrasing just to get a bit of bawdy comedy in there on ''Peaceful Afternoon''. "I pray that it''s the luck-, lucky lucky number And although I know I''ve brought you joy and happiness babe I''ve also been a fec-, a fecund resource for anger" Utterly wonderful. Buy it and play it over and over.
